Valentine's Day and chocolate

Like so many of you I ate lots of turkey and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.

Then came Christmas with ham and all the trimmings. Don’t forget all the candy that was given out as gifts, in stockings and at party’s.

The New Year will soon be here and with my resolutions to exercise more. I have got to get rid of all this extra weight I gained over the past two months. My pants are a little tighter and I can hardly button my shirt over my big fat belly.

So I will keep to my exercise and cut out sweets until that dreaded day in February.

Valentine’s Day. Here comes all the chocolate from our loved one’s, children and friends.

Now you tell me how am I ever going to get rid of all this weight that I have gained over the past few months!

I will eat all my Valentine’s Day candy and hope it will be gone within a week. Then I can get back to my exercise and keep my New Year’s resolution again.

But wait, Easter will soon be here with candy eggs and peeps. I give up!

Pumpkin bread saved my life

I was eating lunch with four friends today at the senior center. This elderly man ask if he could sit down with us beautiful ladies. Of course, we said “yes“.

He got to telling us a short history of his life. His wife had died and he was alone in this big house by his self. He had been thinking about killing his self.

He then told us that he started to talk to God.

He ask God “ what can I do with my life”? God answered him and said “make pumpkin bread”

He started making pumpkin bread and would either give it away to anyone that had know money or sold it for $3.00. He then used the money to make more pumpkin bread,

He then ask us if we wanted male or female bread?

None of us did not know how to answer him, “ so I finally said “what do you mean male or female?’. Of course our minds was heading to the gutter.

He said “ if it has nuts it is male, if bread does not have nuts then it is female. We all had a great laugh this day.

We never know when we meet a stranger what they can contribute to each of our lives.

Now every time I eat pumpkin bread I will always think how pumpkin bread saved a mans life.

Moose pillow

Picture was taken by my husband of a bull moose. He came across moose when he was out walking.
He could not get a good shot with his camera. Moose stood still just for a few seconds for him to get this shot.

I had homespun fabrics left over from another project and decided to make a small pillow using them. Someone gave me a piece of fabric that was a moose print and I thought these would go good together.

Looking through my box of buttons I found the moose button that I had bought about two years ago.

I seem to keep making my craft items with animal fabrics. It is one of my favorite themes to use.
I do have flower prints and keep telling myself that I will use those next time. But as usual I keep going to my animal prints.

Western horse pillow

I have been making western pillows this week. This one I listed on my etsy site.

Made apple turnovers for my family this morning and did they eat them up. I don't no if they was hungry or if apple turnovers was that good.
I cannot give you a recipe as I just made it up as I went. I did use apples that I canned last year. Hope to can more this year. Apple trees seem to be bearing good. Lost our plums to frost so want have any to make jelly with.

Our garden did not do good this year as we had a late spring. I will not have anything to put up but a few tomatoes and bugs got into most everything else.
I have been checking paper to see if anyone has anything for sell from their garden. I think most everyone had the same problem as my family.

I am just thankful that we can go to the grocery store and buy food.

Montana mountains

Grandmother's flower garden quilt

I am working on a grandmother's flower garden quilt. I have a friend that has made several over the past years and decided I need to make one. This pattern is a little different than the usually quilt. How long will it take me to make? I have no idea! I like to make quilts by hand but they do take a long time to make. I still sew a lot of my quilts on my sewing machine. With the economy the way it is and so many people out of work I have not been selling to many quilts so have cut back on making them this year. Have been amking doll quilts and table runners. I did buy a pack of wool batting to make a quilt for my husband and my bed for the winter. Have not decided what pattern I want to use. Really need to get started on that. I will have this quilt machine quilted. This has been a very busy summer and I cannot believe it is almost over with. Planted a garden to can and freeze a little food but cold weather got most of crop. I did manage to can a few things. Need to make more cherry preserves. What I made last year is all gone. Someone in the family liked it. Have been doing a little traveling with family seeing local places close to home.

Breast cancer greeting cards

I have a friend that is fighting breast cancer. I made a personal card to send to her and decided to make a several cards for breast cancer patients and put on my artfire site. I will be making more cards in the coming weeks.

My cards are OOAK and I inclosed a beautiful poem on seperate paper in card.

Leaf gift tags and scrapbooking tags

Cleaning out boxes of crafts that I had made I came across gift tags. I decided to make a few new ones and this is the first set that I made.

It is fun to come across things that one has forgot about. A few things I think," what was I thinking". Others I think, " wow, these are really nice".

Siamese cat and his toys

Here are new pictures of my Kitty Cat. First picture shows him setting on his scratch post. His favorite toy to play with... is a rope. He also likes to hide under a chair while I toss rope to him. I will slowly pull rope out... and he will grab rope... and hold onto it. Maybe pretending it is a snake! He has lots of toys... that I made and bought... but he likes this one simple toy the best. Notice those claws! Second picture... is him setting on back of couch... waitng for my daughter to come in door. Kitty cat sets and waits... on her to come in at same time each day. I don't know who taught him to tell time! He comes and gets me up... at the same time each morning. I get up, feed him and then he goes back to bed. No, I do not go back to bed... by then I am wide awake. Kitty Cat was a stray... that took up at my house. I could not find who he belonged to . Kitty Cat is a wonderful pet... and I am glad that he found us. He was full of worms ... and so skinny that you could see his back bones. I don't think he would have survived much longer outside. We think he jumped out of a car... and the owners could not catch him. He does not like loud noises... and we believe something scared him and he ran. He was used to riding in a car. Now only time he gets in car is to go to vets. He seemed to be well taken care of. We could tell he was used to having his claws cut and his ears cleaned. Did not have fleas, which is very unusual. Guess he was so skinny... from not knowing how to hunt. Now he stays indoors... and does not go outside. So he has a good life now. At least we think so.

How to make a clay pot soldier

This is probably an old pattern and I am sure there are lots of them listed on the web. Most of us do not make things like this but it was a lot of fun. Also had good food to eat.

Several of my friends and I got together today and made these cute little soldiers. You start out with a clay pot in what ever size you want. Size can be from a 2” pot to a 6” pot.

Some of the girls are going to make larger solders to set on their porch.

We started out with the 2” posts and some had 1” pots.

You will need a ceramic glue for gluing the pots together. Ask for this glue at Jo-Ann’s or Michael’s. I do not know name of glue as one of the girls glued my pots before class.

Acrylic paint, cheap paint will do. You will need black, red, blue and white.

Paint brushes. Gold ribbon braid, white felt fabric to cut out hands, black ribbon for belt.

You can add anything that you want to make solder your own. Lots of paper towels and water to clean up.

Start at top and draw on eyes, mouth, and nose. Paint eyes with black paint. Dot 2 little dots onto eye for the sparkle in his eye. For the nose and mouth I used a thin pen.

You can paint a mustache or put red cheeks on.

Paint the hat black. Paint chin strips on.

Paint his shirt red, pants blue. Add gold buttons to front of shirt with paint are gold paper.

Free cut the hands and collar from felt. Glue on.

Glue belt on and glue a gold ribbon down each side of leg.

These was so easy to make. A few of the girls want to make larger pot people in different themes and seasons for their porch.

Huckleberry's

Took a drive in mountains this week and spotted a nice hill of huckleberries. We climbed a small hill to get to berries, you notice I said small hill. Getting up hill was fun but coming back down nature seemed to want to pull you over head first and roll you down the hill. Mosquitoes were not a problem as long as we were in deep woods but coming out to where the sun was shining they suddenly appeared out of no-where. Some as big as a horse. We probably picked about 5 cups enough to make muffins this winter. Huckleberries only grow above 3500 feet and are the size of a pea. Berries can either be tart are sweet. When a patch is found it is kept secret as where you found them. Probably one of the best kept secrets in the USA. And never ask anyone where they found their berries. I have heard that the going rate is $50.00 a pound. Sounds like a lot of money but more work than I would want to put into picking berries. I am not selling mine but keeping for family. I did share a few with friends who want to make syrup to put over ice cream. Huckleberries only grow above 3500 feet and are the size of a pea. Berries can either be tart are sweet. Trip to Merrill Falls

My daughter, her family, my son , husband and I went to Merrill Falls in Seeley Lake, Montana for a fourth of July outing. We passed fields of beautiful bear grass blooming. Yes, bear grass is ate by bears and this part of Montana has grizzly bears. Lucky for us we did not meet nor see any. My son-in-law carried his pepper spray. We kidded him that if he had to use it would he have it pointed toward the bear are spray himself!

We finally made it to the falls after two hours of walking. Falls are beautiful and well worth the walk. Sun was over head so could not get a good photo of falls. There was a dipper that kept flying down in the water and then back up on the bank of falls. Falls are 100 feet tall and water cascades off rocks. There is moss growing on rocks that adds to its beauty. We passed two lakes on the way in and there were lots of ducks swimming around on them.

The only blight was someone forgot their empty water bottles. If you can carry a full water bottle in you can surely carry an empty water bottle back out. Please don't pollute!

Simple gift bag Pattern

I belong to two quilt bee’s and one group is taking off for the summer. We are going to have our last get together next week with a covered dish dinner. Yum!

I decided to make small gifts to take to each of the girls. These are very easy to make.

1. I used three different fabrics for each bag and cut them 8 ½“ x 8 ½” ( 21.6 x 21.6 centimeters ).

2. I used a rotary cutter with a pinking blade. You can use a straight edge if you do not have a pinking blade.

3. Fold fabric into thirds and then fold again once long ways. This makes a little pocket to put a treasure in.

4. I tied four colorful buttons together and put in bag.

5 Tie bag closed with ribbon are yarn. Everything can be used by a quilter.

White pelicans all in a row

Trying to get back to my blog site. Seems like each day something comes up that takes up my time. I took these pictures at the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge.

The first picture is 15 white pelicans, of what I could count. They would swim alone in a straight line and then stop. Gather around in a circle and flush out small fish. Scoop these up in there bills and then swim off again. I have never seen pelicans do this display before.

I was hoping pelicans would swim closer to my side of pond so I could get better pictures of them.

Lavender

Just listed a beautiful lavender sachet on my Artfire site. Use these sachets to hang from door knob, place in box with shoes and your personal drawer. O' the aroma of lavender fills the senses with wonder. Did you know there is a song that is dated from the seventeenth century about lavender! Song is called Lavender Blue. This is a few verses of the song listed on Wikipedia. Song has been sung by many famous artist. "Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavenders' green, when I am king , dilly, dilly, you shall be queen". Even royalty like to use lavender. Queen Victoria used lavender as a deodorant. Louis XIV bath in water scented with lavender. Charles VI used lavender filled pillows. Remember Yardley perfumes?

Nine Patch Quilt with flowers

This quilt is totally sewn by hand and hand quilted. Fabric flowers are scatterd over quilts. I wanted to get a feel of how our ancestry's sewed quilts. This is the second quilt I sewed by hand and have to say I really enjoy sewing this way. It is time consuming and slow. Since this is becoming a lost art I get pleasure making quilts this way. Quilt is 42" x 42". Yes, I still make quilts on my sewing machine. This quilt has been sold.

My cat and flowers

Last week was my birthday. Don’t ask how old I am and I will tell you no lies? My daughter took her dad and I out to lunch and gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. My cat loves real flowers, he smells them, he taste them and sometimes even eats them. As I was putting flowers in a vase he kept trying to see them. I finally put vase on floor so he could get a closer look and snapped this pictures.

The girls from my quilt group gave me a surprise birthday party also. Chocolate cake and punch. I was totally surprised.

Lemonade Recipe

I love lemonade and can drink it anytime of day, winter and summer. Here is the recipe that I use. I like mine a little weaker than recipe calls for so I add at least ½ cup more water. I buy several lemons at the time and let them ripen good for at least a week setting out on my counter. I use a spoon and pull as much pulp from lemon after I squeeze lemons. You will be surprised at how much lemon juice is still in lemons. ************************************************************************************ 2 Large lemons. 1 Cup sugar. 4 Cups water. Cut lemons in half and squeeze juice from. Add sugar and water to container and stir until sugar is dissolved. The quilt top I used for background is one that I am sewing by hand. I have the top made and now need to put the border on and then quilt. It is a simple nine patch but will have flowers appliquéd on.

Cat pillow

This is one of my favorite vintage pictures of a cat. I have used picture on several different items that I have made in the past. I made this small pillow last year. I had forgot about pillow and had it stored in a cabinet alone with several quilts and other pillows. I have made several larger quilts using the elk design. I decided to make a smaller version of quilt. Nice Northwest design. fit right in.

moose pillow

One of my favorite animal themes to use is the moose. I have made quilts, aceo's, pillows and many other items with the moose.

I have seen only three wild moose in the wilds. One day a moose crossed in front of our car to the other side of road. After she got to other side she stopped and looked back. Out of the tall weeds came this cute as a button baby moose. Of course no one had a camera with them so only have memory 's of mama moose and her baby.

Getting accident prone!

In the past two weeks I have had more accidents. I usually am not accident prone but now I am wondering. First I was walking down my front steps and stepped wrong and twisted my ankle. So hobbled around for a week. Second I was putting my cat on my bed and his back claws scratched my arm. A few days later I was helping my cat get in the window and his back claws scratched my arm again. Now I have two lovely scratches side by side on my arm. Two days ago I was picking up a heavy box and it tipped and made a big cut on my arm. Today I was cutting fabric for a quilt and my rotary cutting slipped and almost cut off finger tip. Luckily I did not have to go to doctor. I bought one of the handle thingies that you put on your rulers when you are cutting fabric and forget to use it. After today I will use it, no more cut fingers. Here is a picture of my cat, he does not like his picture took. He is setting on his blanket getting ready to take a nap. He looks mad but is very sweet. Going to make oatmeal cookies. Hope I don’t burn my hand off.

Frog doll quilt

I like to make children's and doll quilts. I make a few doll quilts to put on my Artfire site and others for gifts. I have been going through my fabrics and pulling out fabrics that I had left over from children's quilts that I made. I am sewing these up into small quilts and doll quilts. Small quilts can also be used in middle of table. If you collect frogs this would be a great addition to your collection.

Decorating wood and cigar boxes

I was given three wood boxes of different sizes. One held cigars, one held peanuts and the other a mystery.

I decorated two of them. I painted both boxes acrylic paints inside and out side. On the pink box I used vintage pictures printed on papers with flowers, and butterfly’s. I made book marks for the inside.

The blue box I decorated with oriental pictures on all four sides of box. I made bookmarks, cards and found objects to place inside.

I have not decorated the cigar box yet and probably decorate with different wild animal pictures. I will do a demo on a later Blog how to decorate a box.

Pictures and quilts

About 25 + years ago I made my first quilt. Over the years I have made a lot of quilts. After quilts started to pile up with no place to keep them, I started to sell at a local quilt shop and a gallery that sold only hand made items. I also gave my family quilts over the years. Baby, lap and queen quilts. Many I have forgot what they looked like. When I started to make quilts I did not take many pictures of the ones that I made.

With the older cameras I had to take my roll of film to a store where they sent your film off. After impatiently waiting for a week my pictures finally came back. Such disappointment, most of my pictures where either to light, blurred or to dark.

I remember one time trying to submit some of my wood craft designs to a magazine, I took about 12 rolls of film before I finally got one picture right to send in.

When I discovered the digital camera I thought I was in heaven. I bought a cheap inexpensive one at first to see how I would like it. O, yes! I liked. I could take all the pictures I wanted and print them out on my computer. If I don’t like the way my pictures look I just take more. No more wasted rolls of film and having to wait to see what my pictures look like. I am still learning to take decent pictures but I am getting better. Now just need to learn to take good pictures of my quilts.

Mounting small quilts on foam board

I like to mount a few of my smaller quilts on foam board. I like the looks that it gives to them. Here are directions of how I do it. Very easy to do.

Supplies : Your quilt Foam board: these come in all different colors Sharp tool, I use an ice pick Thread. I used cotton Needle Paper. 2 sheets Glue stick Large rotary cutter. Ruler Acrylic paint. Optional. Paint brush

I had black and white foam but did not like the looks of either with my quilt. I used the white foam and decided to cover it with paper the color I wanted. Using your ruler and rotary blade cut your foam board to the size that you want behind your quilt. I left 1” on each side of quilt. I have a large box of assorted papers for using in mixed media collage. I picked a brown that I thought looked good behind my quilt. Tear your paper into strips and start gluing on foam board. Use a roller are your hand to make sure you get all the air bubbles out from underneath papers.

Did you know that if you tear paper up you will have a white edge and if you tear paper down no white edge. I like the white edge look.

This is how my board looked before I trimmed the papers even to board using my rotary cutter and ruler.

I also used paint to give edges of foam an antique look. I painted edges of foam board with paint, use a thin brush. You may get a little paint on back of board but that is ok.

This is the tricky part. Lay quilt on foam board and mark for holes. Do this for each corner of quilt at top. I also like to stitch the bottom of quilt in middle. Use your ice pick are sharp tool to punch two holes in board. I then take a threaded needle and starting from back of foam board come through one of the holes to front and stitch quilt. Take needle to the back and tie off. I put my quilt a little off to the side of my foam board as I liked it that way. My finished quilt. Ready to be hung on wall. These can also be framed.

doll quilt

Doll quilts are fun to make and collect.

I like to make them as I don’t have space to store many larger quilts.

I had a small piece of rabbit fabric left from a children’s quilt that I made.

I wanted to showcase the fabric and picked this pattern to use.

The pattern is paper pieced, one of my favorites to use.

I choose a tan and dark brown fabric to use. I did not have enough of the backing nor the rabbit fabric to use for my binding. The lime green fabric that I used was perfect. You can find this little quilt for sell on my artfire site.

Lavender sachet

I have been making new lavender sachets this week.

I have a box of beautiful antique lace that I bought in Canada several years ago.

Lace was so brown in color that I was not sure I could get it back to original white condition.

With a little hand washing all the lace washed out beautiful.

I was looking at my box of lace the other day and decided that I need to stop saving it for a raining day. Now that rainiy day is here and I decided to put on sachets.

A few pieces of lace I will use on a wall quilt at a later date.

Good old days

With the high cost of everything today I found these ads from an old Sears Roebuck catalog in 1935. Prices seem to be eye popping cheap compared to today’s prices. We have to remember what folks made back then. I know my grandmother made $10.00 a week working in a cotton mill. Out of this she had $1.00 took out for her Christmas fund too buy her children and grandchildren Christmas gifts each year.

Fairy pillow and log cabin

I am finally getting back to my blog after a very busy summer.I am showing one pillow that I made sewn entirely by hand, no sewing machine used.

I put yo-yo flowers with glass beads on top.

There is a small fairy purse that is made with hand-dyed wool.

I like to make quilts and pillows all by hand and find it very relaxing. I will be posting more pictures of other items I have made as I get time.

Making preserves with Flathead cherries

My daughter gave me several pounds of flathead cherries last week. They taste so good at first, better than store bought cherries . After my family ate their fill for a week we started to get tired of cherries. I needed to do something with about six pounds as they were getting ripe fast. I decided to make preserves and ended up with 12 ½ pints.

Here is the recipe I used. You can also use this recipe with most fresh fruit.

2 pounds cherries ( 6 cups) 4 cups sugar. 6 ½ pint jars Pit cherries and add sugar into large pot. Cook to a rolling boil for 20 minutes. Because my cherries were so ripe and sweet I only added 3 cups of sugar to 2 pounds cherries. I also had to add one box Sure Jell to mine. Put cooked preserves in clean canning jars and seal. This is a simple and easy recipe to use. If you have never canned before I would recommend getting a canning and freezing book by either Ball and Kerr.

Summer flowers

There is a bed of beautiful flowers at the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge. I took these pictures about 30 minutes before dark.

There were a lot of bees, damselflies and mosquitoes flying around the flower beds. The damselflies are a beautiful blue and after several attempts trying to photograph them I finally got a somewhat decent picture of one. The purple flowers are lavender. One of my favorites.

This is the latest picture of my husband camper. Starting to look good.

1974 Aloha camper

My husband bought a 1964 Aloha Shasta compact trailer today. Camper had been used as a hunting camper and you can still smell dog odor in it. The price was very cheap, cheap, cheap.
My son and husband are going to use it on weekend prospecting trips .
They go into areas that have black bears and possible grizzly bears and did not like sleeping in a tent. Outside of camper needs a good painting.

I tried to get pictures before my son and husband gutted it but was to late.
The carpet was so dirty and smelly and it was hard to tell what the original color was.
This picture shows my husband mopping the floors after taking carpet out. You can see how dirty it is, after only just a small bit of mopping. Floor had nice vinyl floor and most likely the original.

This is my son vacuum the dirt out, he had earlier taken out an old frig that does not work. They plan to take this cabinet out and make bedding area a little larger.
There is one small leak in corner that can be fixed.
After we paint, put in new curtains, new bedding and a portable toilet camper should be ready to go.

I believe these are the original curtains. They are in very bad condition. Cute fabric when they was new, have little hula girls on them. I will make new curtains but without the hula girls. Maybe flowers, I think they would like that.

My cat loves flowers

I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my duaghter on mother' s day. I decided to keep the dry purple flowers and put in a vase other red flowers..

The first day my cat, who loves flowers, jumped on the table and checked each one of them out for about 15 minutes.

The next day he again jumped on the table and rearraged them to his liking. Yes, I just left them as he had arranged them.

The next day he again jumped on the table and picked one of the purple flowers from vase. He dropped it on the floor and the second picture shows what he did with it.

I hope this has satisfied his curiosty and will leave the rest of flowers alone.

Kootenai Falls or let me just die

Yesterday we drove 4 hours for a soccer game to Libby, Montana and the temperature was 93*. Not suppose to be that hot here in Montana.
After we left the games we stopped with some of the parents and about 10 kids at Kootenai Falls.

The walk back to falls and swinging bridge was suppose to be a short walk. But with temps in the 90’s and walking down narrow trails going down hill, the walk seemed to go on and on and on.
We crossed a bridge going over the rail road tracks with about 4 sets of stairs on each side of bridge and time I got to other side, I thought let me just die here, but my daughter would not let me. Finally we got to the falls and the river was raging with mountain snow melts.
After a brief look at falls and no kids falling in water we made our way to the swinging bridge.
By time I got there, I was hot , sweating, thirsty, and I thought my heart would beat out of my chest.

I was breathing like a horse that had just raced in the Kentucky Derby.
If my daughter had left me there I think I would have just died right there.
The kids went across the swinging bridge and seemed to have a good time.
I looked at those millions of stairs going up to bridge and decided that I had rather rest on a nice rock than cross that bridge.
After some time kids came back across, ready to climb back up that long hill (mountain) to me.

When we got to bridge going across rail road track, one man had lain down in grass to rest. I really wanted to join him but my daughter said she would carry me on her back up steps. ( great daughter).
I told her I can make it. I believe the steps had multiplied from the first time we had crossed them There seemed to be more of them than the first time.

I have decided either I am to old or out of shape for all these mountain trips. I think it is a little of both.
All in all we had a good time that day and I would do it again, but without the heat.
And a good bottle of whiskey.

Old man winter is out of here

Since old man winter seems to have lifted it's hold I have been doing a lot of bird watching and local site seeing. Came across this old log house that was about to fall down the hill. Also the rock buiding may have been a root cellar. The way the rocks was piled on top of each other was very artistic.

Came across this garter snake lying on the path. He was reluctant to move. When I seen a group of people coming with dogs, I stomped my foot on the pavement and he crawled off into the grass. He was about two feet long. It would have been nice if the kids in the group could have seen snake. Since so many people are afraid of them and they had dogs, I thought it best if he went on his way.

Earth Day and a Canadian goose

I took these pictures this weekend at the Lee Matcalf Wildlife Refuge.

This is a favorite site for amateur and professional photographers to take pictures of birds and scenery.

There was two geese feeding on the lawn but only one that wanted his/her picture taken.

The mountains had a late spring snow storm that came through and dumped several inches of snow on them.

I took these pictures of snow geese that had flown into the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge.
There was about 30 of them and they all made their way on shore to feed except for three.
It seemed that these three was timid or had been spooked before on land. Perhaps a fox or hawk chased them.

After a few minutes a car drove by on the road and scared them off.
The second picture shows them in flight and the third picture shows them landing.
There was a beautiful reflection in the water as they was landing.

Felted woman quilt

I made this for a group of crafters that my daughter and I belong to called “ In Good company”.

Each month we are given a challenge to make something from a kit that we get.

For the month of April we was given 4 colors of wool felt to use, a piece of wool fabric and felt needles along with a few other items.

I told my daughter that we should make something really different. After thinking about it for a few days I came up with making a man and woman wall quilt.
My daughter choose the man and that left me with the woman to make.

I decided to use a vintage picture of a beautiful young girl and use the wool felt to make her hair.
I used wool fabric to make the hat with.

Small wool pillow

I love to make small pillows and since I have never sewn with wool I decided to make a small pillow.
I wanted to see how easy wool is to sew.
I think the wool fabrics sew as good as cotton fabrics.
I will make a larger pillow and a few more smaller pillows.
I love this green color. Green and burgundy colors go together beautiful.
These are hand-dyed wool fabrics.
I bought fabrics from a shop that does their own dying of different fabrics.

Wool yarn and felting

This week I bought from two different shops beautiful wool and wool felting.
Both the fabric and felting had been hand dyed.
There was so many different colors that I had a hard time choosing which one’s I wanted to buy.
I finally decided on a few basic colors to start with.
One shop had every kind of wool from animals that I did not even know wool was used from them.
Some of the wool was so soft that I just wanted to dive into the basket and lie on it.
I used to knit and almost got tempted to start knitting again.
The new fabrics that are out for knitting are a lot different than the old dime store yarns that I used to use.
I keep telling myself I don‘t have time to start a new craft.

Now I just need to decide what I want to make with all this beautiful wool.

I love this vintage picture. I wanted to use it on a small quilt and I could not find just the right fabrics to use with it.
I wanted the quilt to have an old vintage look to it.
I had just made a lap quilt with plaids and had a scrap laying on my cutting table.
I had at last found the perfect fabric to use!
I put some new and vintage buttons on top , beads and hand and machine embroidery.

Fabric collage quilts

I have been making small art quilts in the past few days.
It has been some time since I have made any of these as I have been working on larger quilts.
To take a break from a large quilt, I feel the need to go smaller.

I never know what I am going to make when I start. Sometimes an idea will pop in my head before I get out of bed in the morning.
Morning is the best time for me to think. My mind is refreshed from the worries of the day, at least most times it is.

I first choose my picture and then I look for fabrics that go with the picture.
I lay everything out on a table and start adding different things to get an idea of what my quilt or art piece is going to look like.

Sometimes I will leave quilt over night if everything is not coming together right.
At times I have had a quilt to go together perfect the first time and other times yuck!!
If I am not happy with a piece that I am working on , I take it back a part and reuse the fabrics in something else.

Making vintage ACEO'S

I have been playing around with different ways to make ACEO’S this week.
I like making my bright colors ones that I have on Etsy but decided to make an aged looking ACEO.
Even thought the ACEO did not turn out the way I had planned. I still like the effects.

This is my challenge for this month. This is a group of ladies that get together once a month and we are given a challenge to make each month.

We had to use gel or gesso on a picture and bond this to fabric. I decided to use a wood board that I had and then aged the process. I gave it an aged look.
It is called “Memories” of peaceful days.
It is not my favorite way of transferring pictures. Being a little lazy I had rather print my pictures off on my printer.

making an ACEO card

There are many ways to make an ACEO. I am only going to give a brief outline and hope this will help get you started.
An ACEO has to be only 2.5” x 3.5”.
You can put anything on top of card as long as it is not over ¼” thick. **********************************************************

Use any kind of foundation to put design on. Water color paper, mat board, fabric, metal, and wood.
Almost anything goes.
************************************************************************************

There are a lot of books out on this subject but it is hard to look at a picture and make an ACEO.

I have found that the ACEO’S I make come from deep within me and my imagination.
When I start making an ACEO I have no idea of what I am going to make. Sometimes even I am surprised at what I made.

I am showing how I made one card and try to take you through a few steps.
This is my turtle ACEO card.

First I painted a mat board using good paints. Golden paints are my favorites.

I used a rubber stamp in the back ground. Next I selected a picture from a page that I had run off earlier.
Be sure and use copy right free pictures are your own photos if you plan on selling the card.

I used a permanent glue stick to paste my pictures down.
I let these cards dry and then I put a coat of clear varnish on for protection.
Don’t forget to sign and date on back of card. Hope this helped a little.

Collage art

One of my favorite things to make has always been collage work.
I started making collages when there was no word for them. Back in the dark ages.

My sixth grade teacher kept a lot of my collage work, even after she had retired.
She invited me to her house one day and was showing me the things that I had made. I ask her to give me the art work but she wanted to keep them.
I was hoping to get my work after she passed away but never knew what happen to them.

It is still one of my favorite art works to make. I am now adding paints and canvas to my works and starting to sell in gallery’s and shows.

UFO and wall quilts

I take a monthly class where we are given different craft challenges. The challenge is to take the kit that is given to us and make something from it. This is where one’s imagination comes into play.
For this months challenge we was given a jar of paint and a piece of Tyvek and told to make something with it.
This is mine. I call it “It came from space”. With all the UFO’s sightings being reported on the news I thought this would fit in. I painted a canvas board and glued the Tyvek to it.
I also made a small wall quilt with another kit. This one had metallic paint and a scrap of black fabric. I love leaves and used some of my rubber stamps to stamp on fabric with the paint.

The other quilt I call “Ladybug”. I made a tiny ladybug from fabric and sewed it to quilt.
The ladybug is about ¼” and takes some time to make these as they are so tiny and the fabric is hard to hold.

Kaleidoscope quilt blocks

I think the Kaleidoscope quilt blocks makes up so pretty. Each block is different even after being cut from the same fabrics.

The first block I am showing is one square, pick the same corner from each square to be in center. Four squares make up a block.

Sew two blocks together and press seams open. Sew two halves together and press seams open.

My second Christmas

Ok, so this is my second Christmas with my mistress. She let me help wrap gifts.
First I checked out the bows and paper and they passed my approval.
I did not think wrapping gifts was a lot of fun.
Where’s mine?

I hate to tell her but she is not good at wrapping gifts.
Next year I will get her a gift certificate on how to wrap gifts.

This is the lousy tree she bought for me and it only has lights on it. My mistress says , “It has 250 lights and was on sale”. No balls for me to bat around and not even a tree skirt, what is wrong with her?
My favorite part is being able to lie under the wood box that she has tree setting on. I can hide and it is so warm under here. Heck with the lousy tree! I'm going to take a nap. All this gift wrapping has made me tired.

I made this picture today using scrap pieces of mat board that I had painted some time ago.

I did not know what I was going to make with them and today they seemed to just fall in place as I layed them out on my table.

I painted a small canvas board to put pieces on.

I had a copy of a vintage sign about spitting that also went just right on picture.

I am showing picture framed and a close up.

I thought it turned out nice and looks good in a the frame that I put it in.

I also showing another aceo today and still working on making 100. I need to count them and see how many I have already made.

I love making aceo cards to give and sell. I have made over 200 and have never made the same design twice.
I might use some of the same vintage pictures but each one is still different.
I started collecting aceo’s when they first came on the market.

Volunteer of the year

My husband and I volunteer at Lee Metcalf NWR.
He does data entries and I man the front desk, and any other jobs that they need me to do.
Every year they have a volunteer recognition ceremony.
This year we won the volunteer of the year award. We was given a certificate of appreciation, gift certificates and this beautiful California Quail statue.
We was very surprised that we was chosen and won.
Had cake and ice cream after the ceremony.

Wild rose and hot weather

Since it is so hot I have not been doing a lot of sewing .

This one is a wild rose that grows in Montana.

This one is of my pink geraniums. It seems that I must like pink a lot. For some reason most of the flowers that I bought this year are pink. Most of them was suppose to be red and I guess the plants had wrong tags in them.

The red rose is a climbing rose that grew wild in a mill village in NC. I believe it was back in the 60’s the homes where sold for $25.00 a room and anyone that wanted to buy one had to have houses moved to their own property. Now wild flowers and fruit trees grow and bloom all over this small mountain.

Went for a long hike today in the mountains with my husband, son-in-law, daughter and grandson. Climbed some steep hills and went down some deep valleys. Saw a beautiful mule deer peering at us from behind a bush. He thought we did not see him but I got a good picture before he bounded off. I seen my first bitterroot flower in the outdoors. I have seen these in shops for sell but their beauty pales to the ones growing out in the open. The flowers are very beautiful and the history of there use by the native american is interesting.

Story of the lost quilts

I put two quilts on etsy today, click on quilt to be taken to etsy. I made this full quilt last year and had it machine quilted before moving cross country. I put my quilts in large black plastic bags to keep them clean in my move. When I unpacked I found 4 quilts missing. I gave my daughter some large clear bags that was in another black plastic bag. About two months later she called me and said "guess what I found"? She had looked in bag and found this cat quilt. My husband and son then went thorough every black plastic bag in the garage and did not find my other quilts. We finally figured out that they was either taken to the trash or given to a charity in our haste to get packed and move. Moral of story: do not put your quilts in black garbage bags for any reason.

Memorial Day Heroes.

I made this card yesterday in memory of our military. It is made with vintage drawings from WW II. Every year I buy a red poppy and usually put them in a jar in the house. Over the years I have lost them are the kids played with them and now they are gone. Two years ago I started to put them on the visor of my car. I now have two. I like looking at them in remembrance of our brave men and women when I pull down my sun visor and see the beautiful red poppies. I got the habit of buying Memorial Day poppies from my grandmother and parents who always bought a poppy each year when I was growing up. My grandmother would wear hers proudly on her dress for several days. I heard many stories about WWI and WWII and hope that one day our children will not have to hear stories of wars are even have to be in them. A beautiful poem by Moina Michael, “We cherish too, The Poppy red. That grows on fields where valor led. It seems to signal to the sky. That blood of heroes never die“.

Soiled Doves and flowers

Today we went to a gallery that had an exhibit of old photographs of women in brothels.The pictures are from the 1800's. Some of the women where very beautiful, and had on dresses and hats that I would even wear today. The madams looked like some tough woman. Almost like men and very large women that looked like they could hold their own with a rowdy male customer.I could not take pictures so am putting one that I have on my cd's posted. When I first started out working (years ago) I had a job collecting life and health insurance. One of my clients owned a brothel, except brothel is a nice name to call these places. Yes, they were still around in the 70's and 80's. The women were very kind to me and sometimes their "friend" would pay his favorite ladies insurance for that week. That was my favorite place to collect insurance. It was a hoot. The brothel is no longer in business ( owner was arrested and finally closed down) .
I also am trying to finish up my flower beds. Have a few more to finish planting. I bought two morning glory plants to put on fence. I can't help but laugh that only a few years ago morning glories was considered a pest. Now you can buy seeds and plants. I have always loved them, especially the heavenly blue.
I even think the lowly dandelion is beautiful.

shopping and cake

I made the butter milk cake that is listed on the-feathered-nest blog site. Site is posted in my "favorites places to visit". Taste pretty good. My families favorite cake is rum cake. Very easy to make. I will put recipe on at later time and day. Went to the university today and got some new art supplies. I have a picture of my cat checking them out. He loves to chew on brushes and paper.Does not eat them just chews on them. I have to keep my craft things in plastic boxes so he can't get to them plus keep cat hair off. There is nothing worse than buying a craft item that has cat hair all over it or smells like cigarette smoke. Cannot leave the news paper laying around, he tears it to shreds. My cat who adopted us

Thought I would show a picture of the cat that adopted my husband and me. About a month before we moved cross country I kept seeing this cat in yard. About a week before we moved he was on the porch and I was so shocked at how skinny he was. I tried to find his owner and not finding them I took him to the vets and had the works done. He traveled cross country in our car like he had done this all his life. I am glad he found us as I had just lost a cat before this one and was not going to get anymore. He does keep my feet warm at night.

Wanted to show you a picture that my husband made of me today. I was working on my computer trying to figure out a new program. I think I will go back to paper and pencil, seems to be easier to use. No, we do not have all these animals in our house. I thought it was funny. Boy! Do I need to get a hair cut and clean up around my computer. Yecks!!!

Took a break from craft making and went walking around a wild life refuge, seen lots of ducks, sandhill cranes and a hawk setting on it's nest. Have been trying to make items for an art show next month. I will have some new aceo's on ebay and etsy at a later date. I want to make some aceo's out of fabric. These take a little longer to make. Trying to sew the fabric with a sewing machine can be a little tricky. Like trying to keep your finger away from the needle. I have twice this year broke a sewing machine needle off in my finger.

We all get heavier as we get older because there’s a lot more information in our heads. So I’m not fat, I’m just really intelligent and my head couldn’t hold any more so it started filling up the rest of me!

Quilt top is called "Trip around the world". This is one of my favorite patterns alone with " Double Irish chain". The colors remind me of candy and ice cream colors. Quilt top has been sold.

I made card from papers, vintage pictures and put on matt board. Is blue jay talking to cat are telling others that "a cat is here"?
